Types of bets

There are several ways to make a sports bet in New Jersey. This includes moneylines, point spreads, totals, parlays, teasers, props, in-play, and same-game parlays. Below is a description of each type of sportsbook wager.

Moneyline bets

Moneyline bets are one of the most simple and common types of bets. Moneyline bets revolve around betting on the winner of the game. Point spreads are not relevant to moneyline bets, which are determined by an outright winner of a sporting event.

For example, if you are betting on the Dallas Cowboys vs New York Giants game, the Cowboys are listed at +120, while the Giants are at -140. You can bet $100 on Dallas to win $120 or bet $140 on New York to win $100. If the Cowboys and Giants tie, all moneyline bets on the game push.

Point spreads

Spread bets are a way to bet a game against a certain number of points. This line is created to even out the playing field between a favorite and an underdog.

In football and basketball, these spreads are used to create an even game, where the final point difference usually falls around the spread. In hockey and baseball, the spread is usually listed at -1 ½ and is known as the puck line or run line.

Total

The over/under is a way to bet the total point outcome of a game. The over is a way to cheer for a game to score more points than the total listed, while the under is the opposite.

For example, the Cincinnati Bengals vs New York Jets game has a total listed at 45 ½ points. If the final outcome is Bengals 21 – Jets 17, the total number of points is 38, which would mean the under hits in this scenario.

Totals may be available on a quarter, half, or entire game. It can also be on just one team. This is called a team total.

The Grand Salami is a type of total. It covers points scored in all games in a league on the same day. Hockey is the most common Grand Salami bet. Some sportsbooks offer it on the NFL.

Parlay

Parlay bets are a way to put together multiple bets for a bigger payout. Usually, this involves picking multiple game outcomes and betting them together for a big payout. The thing is though, if one “leg” of the parlay loses, the whole bet loses. If one leg of a parlay pushes, it is dropped from the ticket. On a two-team parlay, it becomes a straight bet. If there are three or more legs of the parlay, it drops by one.

A type of parlay could look like this:

  1. Giants -2 ½ (-110)
  2. Jets +4 ½ (-110)
  3. Eagles vs Commanders Under 50 ½ (-110)

This three-leg parlay would give you odds at about 6/1 for all three to hit. The exact amount depends on the sportsbook’s house rules.

Teasers

Teasers are similar to parlays in the fact that multiple outcomes are tied together. The difference with a teaser is that it is not used to get a bigger payout, but is used to change the spread for each game in the teaser.

If you picked the Eagles -4, Giants -2 ½, and Jets +4 ½, you could put together a 7-point teaser to change the Eagles to +3, Giants to +4 ½, and Jets to +11 ½ for a +120 payout.

Future bets

Futures bets are a way to bet long-term. It is a way to predict the outcome much further in the future for a bigger payout. These usually revolve around which team wins a major award, the championship, a conference, and more. The less likely a team is to win, the higher the payout if it happens.

Prop bets

Prop bets are usually based on betting on player totals or scorers in individual games. These bets can also be placed as single bets or put together to make parlays as well.

An example of a prop bet is Daniel Jones rushing for over 29 ½ yards, or Saquon Barkley scoring a touchdown. Another is if there will be a defensive score, two-point conversion, or overtime in a football game.

Same game parlays

Same-game parlays are usually based on the game outcome and prop bets of a single game. Sportsbooks like FanDuel, DraftKings, Caesars, BetMGM, and BetRivers occasionally offer SGPs, where if you lose, you get your money back in the form of bonus bet credits.
