New York Jets Season Preview – NFL Betting 2022-23

The New York Jets enter a new season with hope after a solid offseason. New York will look to bounce back after another disappointing season. The Jets drafted in the top 5 once again this year and will look to move closer to getting a playoff spot. New York will need to take the next step with their young players if they want to put up a competitive season.

New York is listed in the bottom five for Super Bowl odds and are not expected to make much of a run this season. The Jets are in the AFC East division, which was competitive last season. Both the Buffalo Bills and New England Patriots made the playoffs a year ago, while the Miami Dolphins were only one game out of the postseason.

The Jets had some big signings this offseason picking up Offensive Guard Laken Tomlinson, Tight End C.J. Uzomah, Cornerback D.J. Reed and Safety Jordan Whitehead. New York also drafted Wide Receiver Garrett Wilson, Defensive End Jermaine Johnson and Cornerback Sauce Gardner. New York will look for these moves to push their team to the next level.

2021-22 New York Jets season review

The New York Jets finished last season with a record of 4-13, which had them sitting in last place of the AFC East. The Jets had Zach Wilson as their starting quarterback in 13 games. Wilson went 3-10 in those starts. Mike White and Joe Flacco started the other four games, while Josh Johnson had some time coming off the bench.

The Jets struggled heavily in divisional play throughout last season. New York lost all six games in their division. The Jets only wins came against the Titans, Bengals, Texans and Jaguars this season. New York was outscored 504-310 against opponents last season. The Jets gave up the most points against last season and will need their defense to improve early.

Young offense

Zach Wilson will be the starting quarterback for the Jets to open up this season. Wilson passed for 2334 yards, 9 touchdowns and 11 interceptions last season. He also rushed for 185 yards and 4 touchdowns. Wilson had ups and downs all throughout last season, but will look to break through in his second year in this league.

New York looked to patch up some of their offensive holes this offseason and will look for that to help Wilson in his second year. The Jets still have their two receiving leaders from last season in Elijah Moore and Corey Davis. New York also added Garrett Wilson from Ohio St. and C.J. Uzomah at Tight End.

The Jets will have some competition at running back this season between Michael Carter, Telvin Coleman and rookie Breece Hall. Carter and Coleman rushed for 639 and 356 yards respectively last season. New York added Laken Tomlinson at the guard position to tighten up a very weak offensive line. Tomlinson will join Alijah Vera-Tucker and Mekhi Becton on the O-Line.

New look defense

The Jets will look for their defense to take the next step entering this season. Jermaine Johnson will look to jump right into the front seven after getting drafted at 26th overall. New York’s defensive line will be highlighted by Carl Lawson, Quincy Williams and C.J. Mosley. Mosley will bounce back after a bit of an off season for him in 2021.

New York’s secondary got a fresh look after a really rough season last season. The Jets added Sauce Gardner and D.J. Reed at cornerback. Both players will look to make an immediate impact in New York’s zone coverage scheme. The Jets also have Jordan Whitehead and Lamarcus Joyner at safety.

The Jets defense last season was the worst in the league in points against and yards against. New York’s passing defense finished 30th in yards against, while the rushing defense was 29th. New York added to their defense, which will be the key to their success entering the 2022-23 season.

Jets to struggle again this season

New York has made some major moves entering this season, but I am not sure if it is time to buy into the hype. The Jets will be relying heavily on young players at many positions, which often leads to inconsistency and growing pains. Zach Wilson did not show much throughout last season to prove he can lead this young offense either.

The Jets have been given a very difficult first half of the season this year. New York will start with four straight games against the AFC North, while also playing teams like the Broncos, Packers and Bills before their bye week. The second half gets a bit easier, but I do not expect New York to look competitive late into the season.

New York’s over/under win total is listed at around 5 ½ wins most places, which seems a bit high with this young offense. The Jets finished with four wins a season ago, but I am not sure if this team is two wins better. New York has a poor draw for the first half of the season and with question marks at the most important position, I like the under on their win total.

Best Bet: New York Jets Under 5 ½ Wins
